My 2025 Agodi Family Weekend Experience

By: Oluwamayowa Joseph (aka Oj_tiwa)

Saturday Recap

First off, let me apologize in advance if my writing style seems a little too playful. But, see, life is already serious enough, let’s have some fun while we talk about an amazing weekend!

Now, let me just say I was surprised (and a little pained) to find out that there was a movie screening as part of the Agodi Family Weekend. I mean, I never expected that! But before we get into that, let me confess: I was late. Yes, you’d think someone writing about an event would actually show up on time, right? Well… surprise! I walked in towards the end of the program. Don’t judge me, please. Clears throat.

Why was I late? Well, since you promised not to tell anyone I know (right?), I’ll be honest; I lost track of time. I assumed it would follow the usual structure of different sessions, and I figured I wouldn’t miss much. Turns out, I was very wrong.

Lesson learned: never assume you know how a program will go. You might miss something amazing!

The Movie – The Forge

So, about that movie I missed (side-eye to myself). Thankfully, the panel discussion helped me catch up. Listen here

The movie, The Forge, tells the story of Isaiah Wright, a 19-year-old struggling with direction in life. That is until Joshua Moore, a fitness entrepreneur and mentor, takes him under his wing.

It was a powerful story about discipleship, mentorship, forgiveness, and spiritual growth. One of the most profound moments for me was learning how Joshua forgave and discipled the man who killed his son. That hit deep.

If he could do that, what excuse do we have for holding onto grudges? It reminded me that discipleship isn’t just about what we say, it’s about living out God’s love and forgiveness daily.

Insights from the Attendees

Since I missed a good part of the event, I had to do some impromptu journalism (by the way, how much do journalists earn these days? Someone should ask Oliz or Bro Emmanuel to see me after this!).

I interviewed two youth representatives, Toluwalase and Toluwanimi (no, they’re not siblings, it’s just a coincidence), whom I’ll call TL and TN. I also got insights from two of our pastors, Pastor Ololade and Sis. Aderonke, to balance the youth and adult perspectives.

Health Talk

We also had a health talk session that emphasized caring for our bodies; what we eat and drink, how we exercise, and general wellness. This is where I have to personally pray for strength because…

But seriously, taking care of our health is part of being an effective disciple. If we are in good health, we can do more for God. So, note to self (and to you too): make healthier choices!

Sunday Recap

For Sunday, I was determined not to repeat Saturday’s mistake. I got to church early, picked a good seat (where the AC and fan were working well, because priorities!), and prepared for an amazing time.

And trust me, Sunday delivered.

Worship Like Never Before

The praise and worship session? Wow. I didn’t expect the level of energy the worship leader brought. She was jumping, singing, and leading with so much passion that I had to take notes for my fellow choir members.

Lesson: Worship doesn’t always have to be solemn; it can be expressive, and full of energy too!

The “Dramama

Okay, we need to talk about that drama performance. The message was solid, the acting was great, but… did we really need that much spilled water on stage? (Not judging, just asking.)

Thankfully, our ushers were on top of things, cleaning up immediately. One usher even used a hand towel to ensure the floor was dry, and Rev. Oyelade actually prayed for him. It’s the little acts of service like this that remind me how amazing it is to be part of the body of Christ.

Rev. Oyelade’s Message – The Mark of a True Disciple

Some key takeaways from the sermon:

  • John the Beloved’s 4-point agenda for being a good disciple. No. 3 was teachability, and that really stuck with me.
  • A disciple is a lifelong learner and follower of Jesus Christ.
  • Discipleship empowers you to make an impact.

Simple but powerful. It’s not enough to talk about discipleship, we have to live it.

Content Creation & The “Great Disappearance”

Now, let’s talk about the real struggle; getting people to stay behind after service for content creation.

The creative team wanted to make a video for Promise Keeper (by Sound of Salem), and let me just say, I finally understand our leaders’ frustration. When they ask us to wait after service, and suddenly everyone disappears… it is painful.

But after some gentle persuasion (read: shouting, begging, and running around), we gathered a few people and filmed the video. It was actually so much fun!

And yes, I might have discovered a hidden talent for choreography. Okay, fine, I just found the simplest dance routine and made everyone follow it, but that still counts, right? Teaching people anything is not easy, o!

Final Thoughts – More Than Just a Weekend

At the end of the day, the Agodi Family Weekend was more than just a fun gathering. It was a reminder that discipleship is a lifestyle, not just something we talk about in church.

To those who missed it? Well… side-eye.
